New York road signs

New York road signs practice

New York DMV says road-sign knowledge is part of the written permit test and publishes a dedicated road-sign quiz. Study what each sign requires you to do, then practice recognition without relying only on color or memorized pictures.

Learn the sign categories before individual signs

NY DMV explains that regulatory signs, warning signs, destination signs and service signs use recurring colors and shapes. Those patterns help you identify the purpose of an unfamiliar sign before you read every symbol or word.

  • Regulatory signs tell you what is required or prohibited.
  • Warning signs alert you to hazards or changing road conditions.
  • Destination and guide signs help with routes and directions.
  • Service signs point to useful facilities and services.

Recognize the signs New York highlights

The New York manual's road-sign section highlights signs such as STOP, YIELD, railroad crossing, DO NOT ENTER, turning prohibitions, lane-end and merge warnings, school crossing, slippery-road and traffic-signal-ahead signs.

For each one, practice the driving response. A sign question is easier when you know the action it requires, not just its name.

Use both official and mixed practice

Take the DMV's road-sign quiz after reviewing Chapter 4, then switch to mixed permit practice so signs appear alongside right-of-way, traffic-control and safety questions.
