New Jersey knowledge-test format and passing score

| questions | 50 |

40 of 50 is the passing mark
The MVC sample-test page states that the actual general knowledge exam contains 50 questions and requires 80%, which is 40 correct answers.
The MVC offers multiple test languages
The MVC currently lists written testing in English, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Hindi, Albanian and Turkish. Oral testing is offered in English and Spanish, with MVC-arranged interpreter options in qualifying cases.
The steps to a New Jersey driver license
New Jersey first-time drivers begin with an initial permit, pass the knowledge and vision tests, complete the supervised-driving period that applies to their age, pass the road test and then receive a probationary license.
- Step 1. Make an appointment and obtain your initial permit.
- Step 2. Bring the required identification and residency documents.
- Step 3. Pass the knowledge test and the 20/50 vision standard.
- Step 4. Practice under the supervision rules for your age and permit type.
- Step 5. Complete the required practice period and road test.
- Step 6. Receive a probationary license, drive unsupervised for one year and then upgrade to a basic license.
Before you go: requirements and documents
New Jersey permit and first-license requirements
How to get a New Jersey first permit and license: initial permit, 6 Points of ID, knowledge and vision tests, supervised driving, road test and probationary license.
Open the requirements guide →Documents for a New Jersey permit or first license
Documents for a New Jersey permit or first driver license: 6 Points of ID, residency proof, Social Security number/ITIN/affidavit, BA-208 and REAL ID differences.
Open the document checklist →Build your 6 Points of ID package
The MVC requires paper or hard-copy proof of age and identity that satisfies the 6 Points of ID rules. Check the current selector before your visit because document values and combinations matter.
Standard and REAL ID use different residency counts
A Standard New Jersey license or ID requires one proof of New Jersey residential address. A REAL ID requires two proofs. The MVC accepts electronic or paper versions for listed residency documents.
Fees
New Jersey currently lists both the Student Learner's Permit and GDL Examination Permit at $10. The initial standard auto driver license fee is $24.
| student/examination permit | $10 |
|---|---|
| initial auto license | $24 |
| pair of GDL decals | $4 |

New Jersey permit rules for drivers under 21
New Jersey uses a Graduated Driver License system for young drivers. The student learner's permit can begin at 16 through an approved behind-the-wheel course; the examination permit route begins at 17.
Two common GDL permit routes
At age 16, the student learner's permit route is tied to approved behind-the-wheel driver training. From age 17, an applicant can use the GDL examination-permit route and complete the MVC knowledge and vision requirements.
50 supervised hours, including 10 in darkness
For under-21 permit holders subject to the rule, New Jersey requires at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 during darkness. The supervising adult completes MVC form BA-CSD to certify the hours.
GDL restrictions continue after the permit
Applicable under-21 GDL restrictions include red decals, limits on nighttime driving and passengers, no use of hand-held or hands-free interactive wireless devices, and seat-belt requirements.
First New Jersey driver license for adults
Adults getting a first New Jersey driver license still begin with the MVC permit and testing process. For GDL applicants age 21 or older, the MVC first-license path uses at least three months of supervised driving before the road test.
Start with the permit, knowledge and vision tests
An adult first-time applicant gets the initial permit, satisfies the 6 Points of ID and residency requirements, and passes the knowledge and vision tests before beginning supervised driving.
Age 21+ GDL applicants practice for at least three months
The MVC first-license and road-test pages state that GDL applicants over 21 practice supervised driving for at least three months before the road test. Non-GDL cases can use different timing, so follow the path shown for your permit.
Probationary license comes before the basic license
After passing the road test, you obtain a probationary license. The MVC then requires one year of unsupervised driving before upgrading to a basic license.
Appointments and office visits
New Jersey requires appointments for first-time permit/license transactions and knowledge tests at Licensing Centers, and a separate appointment for the road test.
First permit and knowledge test
MVC Licensing Centers require appointments for a first-time license or permit and for auto knowledge tests. If testing capacity is available, the knowledge test may sometimes be taken at the permit appointment.
Road tests use their own appointment
The road test requires an appointment and can be scheduled online or at a driver testing center after the knowledge and vision requirements and the applicable supervised-practice period are complete.
Probationary license can be walk-in after you pass
After a successful road test, the MVC says you may obtain the probationary driver license at the road-test location if available, or at a Licensing Center with your stamped permit and documents without an appointment.
New Jersey MVC locations
New Jersey separates MVC facilities by service type. First permits, first licenses and knowledge testing are handled at Licensing Centers, while vehicle, road-test, inspection and regional-service functions can use different locations.
Find the right office
Find New Jersey MVC Licensing Centers, Vehicle Centers, road-test locations, inspection stations and Regional Service Centers.
Open office locations →Check the service first
Office types, appointment rules and testing availability can differ by location. Confirm the exact service before you travel.
Check appointment rules →After the permit: prepare for the road test
The New Jersey road test comes after the knowledge and vision tests and the supervised-driving period that applies to your permit. An appointment is required.
What to bring
- The same 6 Points of ID used for the permit.
- A valid examination permit.
- A New Jersey licensed supervising driver age 21 or older with at least three years of driving experience.
- Required red GDL decals for drivers under 21.
- A qualifying registered, inspected and insured vehicle.
What the examiner checks
MVC lists skills including reversing, stopping at signs, approaching intersections, smooth stopping, proper seating, turning around, steering, parallel parking and yielding right-of-way.
If you fail, wait 14 days
The MVC requires at least a 14-day wait before another road test. If you pass, the examiner endorses the permit so you can obtain the probationary license.
