Indiana BMV knowledge-exam format

Indiana's computer-based knowledge exam is based on the Driver's Manual and has two sections: traffic maneuvers and traffic signs. You must score at least 80% on each section. A passing result is valid for 180 days; after a failed knowledge exam, you wait until the next business day to try again.

maneuvers + signs2 sections
passing threshold80% each
passing result validity180 days

Both sections must pass

A strong score in one section does not offset a weak score in the other. Indiana requires 80% or higher in each component.

Passing result is valid for 180 days

Complete the permit transaction while the passing knowledge result is still valid.

The steps to a Indiana driver license

Indiana offers two entry ages for a learner's permit: 15 when enrolled in approved behind-the-wheel training, or 16 without driver education. Both routes require identification documents, vision screening and the knowledge exam.

  1. Step 1. Study the current electronic Indiana Driver's Manual.
  2. Step 2. Bring proof of identity, Social Security number, lawful status and two Indiana-residency documents, then pass the vision screening and knowledge exam.
  3. Step 3. Hold the permit for the required period, complete the supervised-driving log and schedule the driving skills exam when eligible.

Indiana teen learner-permit rules

Indiana lets a teen start a learner permit at 15 when enrolled in approved behind-the-wheel training. The first-license path also requires supervised practice and age/holding-period eligibility.

Starting at age 15 requires driver education

The teen must show a valid Certificate of Driver Education proving enrollment in an approved behind-the-wheel course.

Complete the supervised-driving log

Indiana requires at least 50 supervised hours, including 10 at night, before the driver-license application.

Driver education affects the minimum license age

The current BMV driver-license page states that a driver-education graduate may qualify from age 16, while the no-driver-education route has a later minimum age of 16 years and 270 days. The permit holding requirement also must be satisfied.

Indiana first driver license for adults

An adult who is learning to drive in Indiana still starts with a learner's permit, knowledge and vision testing and supervised practice before the driving skills exam.

Get the permit first

At age 16 or older, Indiana does not require driver education to obtain a learner permit, but identity documents, vision screening and the knowledge exam still apply.

Complete supervised driving

Indiana's driver-license page requires at least 50 hours of supervised practice, with 10 nighttime hours unless a daylight-only restriction applies.

Schedule the driving skills exam

BMV branch skills tests require an appointment. BMV-licensed driver training schools can also administer skills tests to eligible permit holders.

Appointments and office visits

Indiana separates knowledge testing from the driving skills exam. The knowledge exam normally does not require an appointment, but the driving skills exam does.

Knowledge exam usually needs no appointment

BMV says an appointment is not required for the regular computer-based knowledge exam unless you need special assistance such as having the exam read to you. Arrive at least 30 minutes before branch closing.

Driving skills exam requires an appointment

The driving exam must be scheduled at least 48 hours and no more than three weeks in advance under the current BMV instructions.

Check eligibility before booking

An expired permit or certain account situations can block online scheduling, in which case BMV directs customers to its contact center.

After the permit: prepare for the road test

Indiana's driving skills exam requires an appointment at a BMV branch unless you use an eligible licensed driver-training school. The BMV checks applicant and vehicle requirements before the test begins.

Book the test in advance

BMV says branch driving tests must be scheduled at least 48 hours and no more than three weeks ahead.

Bring an eligible vehicle

The vehicle must be insured and pass the pre-test inspection, including lights, signals, doors, windshield visibility and other safety items.

Know the failure and validity rules

After a failed driving skills exam, wait seven days. A passing result remains valid for two years or until the learner permit expires, whichever happens first.
