Indiana permit requirements
Indiana learner's permit requirements
Indiana offers two entry ages for a learner's permit: 15 when enrolled in approved behind-the-wheel training, or 16 without driver education. Both routes require identification documents, vision screening and the knowledge exam.
- 15with approved behind-the-wheel training
- 16without driver education
- 50 / 10supervised total / night hours
Choose the correct entry route
At 15, the applicant must show a valid Certificate of Driver Education proving enrollment in approved behind-the-wheel training. At 16 or older, Indiana allows the permit without driver education.
Pass vision and knowledge
Both routes require the BMV vision screening and knowledge examination before permit issuance.
Complete supervised practice
Indiana requires a supervised-driving log totaling at least 50 hours, including 10 at night, before the first driver license.
