Georgia learner's permit for drivers under 18

Georgia's teen licensing path begins with a Class CP learner's permit from age 15. A Class D provisional license is available from age 16 after the permit period, Joshua's Law requirements, supervised driving and the road test.

Class CP permit from age 15

Applicants at least 15 can apply for a Class CP permit after meeting the school, document, vision and knowledge-test requirements. A supervising Class C driver age 21 or older must sit beside the permit holder.

Joshua's Law applies at 16 and 17

Georgia requires 16- and 17-year-old Class D applicants to complete a DDS-approved driver-education course. The approved pathways include 30 hours of classroom or online instruction plus either certified behind-the-wheel training or the approved parent-taught option.

40 supervised hours, including 6 at night

Teen Class D applicants must complete 40 hours of supervised driving, including 6 nighttime hours. All teens must also hold the learner's permit for at least one year and one day before Class D issuance.

First Georgia driver license for adults

A first-time Georgia driver age 18 or older can apply directly for a Class C driver license or first obtain a Class CP instructional permit for practice. The direct route still requires the documentation, knowledge exam, road test and supervised-driving certification.

Adults have two first-license options

Georgia's Driver's Manual says a first-time applicant age 18 or older can immediately apply for a Class C license or obtain a Class CP permit first to gain supervised driving experience.

The direct Class C route still includes both tests

A never-licensed adult applying directly for Class C must satisfy the document requirements and successfully complete the knowledge and road-test examinations.

Certify 40 supervised hours including 6 at night

Georgia requires the first-time adult applicant to sign an affidavit affirming at least 40 hours of supervised road driving, including 6 hours at night. The regular Class C license is currently $32 for eight years.

Appointments and office visits

Georgia DDS currently requires appointments for behind-the-wheel automobile, motorcycle and CDL road tests. Other common in-person services do not generally require appointments, but customers should complete the online License/ID/Permit Form before visiting.

Permit and knowledge-test visits

For a Class CP permit, complete the License/ID/Permit Form before visiting a DDS Customer Service Center. DDS currently states that appointments are required for road tests rather than ordinary in-person services.

Road tests require an appointment

Automobile, motorcycle and CDL road tests are appointment-only. Use DDS Online Services to schedule, modify or cancel the road-test appointment.

Check documents before you travel

An appointment or online form does not replace the document, eligibility or vehicle requirements. Review the checklist for your permit or license type before going to the Customer Service Center.

After the permit: prepare for the road test

Georgia's noncommercial Class C/D road test is appointment-only. DDS offers traditional and virtual road-test formats, checks the vehicle and required documents, and requires a minimum score of 75% to pass.

Schedule before you go

Walk-ins are not accepted for the behind-the-wheel automobile test. Complete the online License/ID/Permit Form and use DDS Online Services to reserve the road test.

Bring a qualifying vehicle

Bring a paper copy of the vehicle registration and a current valid insurance card. Rental-car applicants must be named on the rental agreement, and vehicles must pass the DDS safety inspection.

Adult first-time drivers also certify supervised practice

For the age-18-and-over road-test route, DDS requires a valid Georgia noncommercial learner's permit, a passed knowledge exam and an affidavit confirming 40 hours of supervised driving including 6 hours at night.
