Arizona teens can begin the Class G graduated licensing process at age 15 years and 6 months by passing the non-commercial knowledge test and obtaining a graduated instruction permit.

Get the graduated instruction permit

Pass the knowledge test, bring original supporting documents and parent/guardian approval, then complete the vision screening and photo at an MVD office.

Standard supervised-practice route

The standard route requires at least 30 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 at night, before the road test. Arizona also lists a reduced-hour option for certain approved courses.

Approved driver education can change the road-test path

Arizona's teen guide says completion of an eligible high-school or private driver-education program can waive the road test when the required proof is provided within the state's stated time window.

Arizona first driver license for adults

If you have never had a U.S. driver license, Arizona requires a passing permit test before you schedule a road test. Adults who need to practice legally can obtain an instruction permit after passing the written test.

Pass the written test first

The permit test has 30 multiple-choice questions and requires 80% or higher. First-time U.S. drivers need a passing written test before the road test.

Use an instruction permit for legal practice

Arizona's MVD guidance says adults who need to learn on public roads should obtain an instruction permit. Unlike applicants under 18, adults are not subject to the six-month holding period.

Schedule the road test when ready

For applicants 18 or older, MVD's road-test eligibility guidance requires a passing written-test score; the teen six-month permit condition does not apply.

Appointments and office visits

Arizona lets customers schedule MVD services through AZ MVD Now. The written permit test can be taken at an MVD office without an appointment during published testing hours; road tests require an appointment.

Written permit test

MVD says in-office permit tests are offered on touchscreen computers during published weekday testing hours and no appointment is necessary. Teens may also qualify for Permit Test @ Home.

Arizona road tests are scheduled through AZ MVD Now and are taken in person. Applicants under 18 need the required permit history; adults need a passing written-test score.

Bring a qualifying vehicle

The test vehicle must be in good operating condition with valid registration and current liability insurance. Rental-car applicants must be listed on the rental agreement.

Understand the scoring system

MVD publishes point deductions for basic safety knowledge, driving and parking errors. Accumulating 21 points or more results in a failed test.

Arizona has a hot-weather vehicle rule

MVD states that a vehicle without air conditioning cannot be used for skills testing after noon from June 1 through September 22.
