Missouri's written permit test has 25 questions and requires 20 correct answers, or 80%, to pass. Written-test passing standard
You must answer at least 20 of 25 questions correctly, which is an 80% score.
Permit testing has more than the written test
Vision and road-sign recognition are also part of the instruction-permit examination process.
The steps to a Missouri driver license
Missouri's Class F instruction permit begins at age 15. Testing happens at an MSHP examination station, while the actual permit is issued afterward by a Missouri license office.
- Step 1. Study the current Missouri Driver Guide, especially the driver examination, rules of the road and traffic-sign chapters.
- Step 2. Take the written, vision and road-sign tests at an MSHP examination station, then bring the Driver Examination Record and required identity/lawful-status/Social Security/residency documents to a license office.
- Step 3. Receive the instruction permit and practice under Missouri's supervision rules. If using the teen GDL path, satisfy the 182-day permit period and 40 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night, before the intermediate-license road test.

Missouri teen instruction-permit rules
Missouri's GDL system begins with a Class F instruction permit at age 15. The permit stage builds supervised driving experience before the Intermediate License.
Hold the permit for at least 182 days
The counting period begins after issuance, and the teen also must meet Missouri's clean-driving-record requirements.
Complete supervised driving
Missouri requires at least 40 hours of instruction, including 10 hours at night between sunset and sunrise.
Supervision rules change at age 16
Under 16, Missouri limits the eligible accompanying drivers more strictly; at 16 or older, the supervising driver in the front seat generally must be at least 21 and properly licensed.
Missouri first driver license for adults
Adults applying for their first Missouri Class F license use the same core examination system but do not follow the teen GDL progression to an Intermediate License.
Complete the examination steps
Pass written, vision and road-sign recognition testing at an MSHP examination station.
Use an instruction permit for legal practice
Obtain the actual permit from a Missouri license office before practicing on public roads.
Pass the driving test for the full Class F license
When ready and eligible, complete the road test through MSHP and then return to a license office for issuance.
Appointments and office visits
Missouri separates driver testing from license issuance. MSHP handles written, vision, sign and driving tests; DOR license offices issue the permit or license after you bring the examination record.
Testing is handled by MSHP
Use the official Highway Patrol examination-station information for testing hours and locations.
License offices issue the credential
After passing the permit tests, take the Driver Examination Record and required documents to a Missouri license office.
Road testing is also through MSHP
Teen Intermediate License applicants return to an MSHP examination station for the driving-skills examination when eligible.
Missouri driver-testing and license-office locations
Missouri uses two separate location systems. Driver testing is performed by Missouri State Highway Patrol; permit and license documents are issued through Missouri license offices.

Teen prerequisites come first
Before the Intermediate License road test, the teen must satisfy the 182-day permit period, practice-hour requirement and driving-record conditions.
Bring the valid Missouri instruction permit
The GDL instructions specifically require the valid permit for the examination.

After passing the MSHP test, the licensing transaction is completed through Missouri's license-office system.
