Arizona requirements
Arizona instruction permit requirements
Arizona requires first-time U.S. drivers to pass the permit test before scheduling a road test. An instruction permit is available from age 15 years and 6 months and is valid for 12 months.
- 15½minimum instruction-permit age
- 12 monthspermit validity
- $7permit fee
The Arizona instruction-permit path
- Study the Arizona Driver License Manual and official practice tests.
- Pass the 30-question permit test.
- Visit MVD with the application and original supporting documents.
- Complete vision screening and photo capture.
- Pay the instruction-permit fee and practice under the applicable supervision rules.
Under 18: six-month hold
Drivers under 18 must hold the graduated instruction permit for at least six months or until age 18 before upgrading to the Class G license.
Adults do not have the teen six-month hold
Applicants 18 and older still need a passing written test before the road test. An instruction permit is used when an adult needs to practice driving legally, but the teen six-month holding rule does not apply after age 18.
