Use the current manual as your source of truth

The MVC manual covers New Jersey licensing, driver testing, signs, signals, traffic laws, defensive driving, alcohol and drug rules, sharing the road and the Graduated Driver License program.

Because New Jersey updates licensing rules and supervised-driving requirements, use the current MVC edition instead of an old third-party PDF.

A practical study order

  • Start with traffic signs, signals and pavement markings.
  • Review right-of-way, intersections, turns, lane use, passing and parking.
  • Study speed, following distance, stopping and defensive-driving rules.
  • Review alcohol, drugs, distracted driving and GDL restrictions.
  • Finish with the MVC sample knowledge test and revisit weak topics.

Use the MVC sample knowledge test

The official MVC sample test is useful for checking how rules are phrased. The MVC notes that the real general knowledge exam contains 50 questions and requires 40 correct answers.
