New Jersey road test
The New Jersey road test comes after the knowledge and vision tests and the supervised-driving period that applies to your permit. An appointment is required.
- 6 monthsGDL practice under 21
- 3 monthsGDL practice over 21
- 10–15 mintypical road-test length
What to bring
- The same 6 Points of ID used for the permit.
- A valid examination permit.
- A New Jersey licensed supervising driver age 21 or older with at least three years of driving experience.
- Required red GDL decals for drivers under 21.
- A qualifying registered, inspected and insured vehicle.
What the examiner checks
MVC lists skills including reversing, stopping at signs, approaching intersections, smooth stopping, proper seating, turning around, steering, parallel parking and yielding right-of-way.
If you fail, wait 14 days
The MVC requires at least a 14-day wait before another road test. If you pass, the examiner endorses the permit so you can obtain the probationary license.
