The New York permit application path

NY DMV requires an Application for Permit, Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card (MV-44), the required proofs for the credential type you choose, a vision test, the learner-permit knowledge test and the applicable fee.

Use the DMV's Document Guide or the current ID-44 instructions before an office visit. Standard, REAL ID and Enhanced credentials do not use exactly the same proof rules.

• Choose Standard, REAL ID or Enhanced before you assemble your documents.
• Complete MV-44.
• Gather the required proof of identity, age and New York residence.
• Meet the Social Security requirement that applies to your credential type.
• Pass the vision requirement and the learner-permit knowledge test.
• Pay the permit/license fee based on the DMV's current fee calculation.

What comes after the permit

A permit is permission to learn under New York's supervision and location restrictions; it is not a full driver license. Before the road test, most first-time drivers must complete the required pre-licensing or driver-education step and satisfy the supervised-practice rules that apply to their age.

Prepare before you test

Use the official Driver's Manual for the rules, the DMV's chapter quizzes for a state checkpoint, and Road to Permit for mixed practice. Keep application facts and traffic-rule study separate so a document issue does not distract from test preparation.
