Wisconsin instruction-permit requirements
A Wisconsin Class D instruction permit is available from age 15 and is required before a new driver practices. Applicants pass knowledge, signs and vision tests, complete MV3001, provide required documents and pay the permit fee.

Core permit steps
- Study the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook.
- Pass the knowledge and signs tests and vision screening.
- Complete MV3001 and provide the required identity/status/SSN/residency information.
- Pay the instruction-permit fee and follow the supervised-driving restrictions.
Under 18 adds education and sponsorship
A minor must be enrolled in certified driver education, have an adult sponsor and satisfy Wisconsin's school-status requirements.
Adults use the same permit as the practice stage
Applicants 18 and older do not use the teen education/sponsor rules, but still follow the Class D permit, testing, documentation and supervised-practice requirements.
