Michigan adult first license
Michigan first driver license for adults
If you are 18 or older and have not been licensed in Michigan or another state during the previous four years, Michigan says you must pass the written knowledge test and apply for a Temporary Instruction Permit before practicing for the road test.
- 18+adult path
- 30 daysminimum TIP practice
- TIPrequired before skills test
Pass the knowledge test
The knowledge test can be taken at a Secretary of State computer station, and eligible adults may use Michigan's online testing option. After passing, complete the office requirements for the TIP.
Practice for at least 30 days
Michigan requires supervised practice with a licensed adult for at least 30 days before the driving skills test.
Use an approved driver testing business
Michigan does not administer ordinary driving skills tests at Secretary of State offices. Approved independent testing businesses perform the test.
