Michigan test format
Michigan driver knowledge test format
For first-time adults, Michigan requires a written driver knowledge exam before issuing a Temporary Instruction Permit. Eligible adults can take the same knowledge test online or at a Secretary of State office.

- Online or officeeligible adult options
- 70%teen Segment 1 passing score
Adult knowledge test
Michigan's adult New Drivers page states that the written knowledge test includes a road-sign test and must be passed before the TIP is issued. The state also offers online testing to eligible adults for a convenience fee.
Teen knowledge testing is part of driver education
For drivers under 18, the Segment 1 state exam is part of approved driver education. Michigan SOS states that a score of at least 70% is required to pass Segment 1.
Do not rely on an unofficial question count
The current public SOS pages reviewed for this guide do not publish a regular operator-test question count, so this page does not claim one.
