Documents for a first Michigan driver license

For an original Michigan driver license, the Secretary of State requires proof of a valid Social Security number, U.S. citizenship or legal presence, identity and at least two documents establishing Michigan residency.

Prepare the four proof categories

  • Valid Social Security number, or the applicable ineligibility documentation.
  • U.S. citizenship or legal presence.
  • Identity.
  • At least two documents establishing Michigan residency.

Bring acceptable original or certified documents

Michigan SOS says photocopies and faxes are not accepted for the core identity-document categories. All documents remain subject to Department of State approval.

Teen Level 1 has extra program records

For a Level 1 teen license, Michigan also requires the Segment 1 Certificate of Completion and parent or guardian involvement.
