Maryland document checklist

Documents for a Maryland learner's permit or first license

Maryland MVA requires documents proving your identity, Social Security number and Maryland residency. The exact list depends on your status and credential, so use the MVA Online Document Guide before your appointment.

  • Identityproof required
  • SSNproof required when applicable
  • 2Maryland residency documents for first license/ID

Learner's-permit documents

The learner's-permit page lists proof of identity and proof of Social Security number among the documents everyone must bring. Dependents may need additional proof of the parental relationship when the identity document does not show it.

Maryland residency

For a first Maryland driver's license or ID, MVA requires two documents proving Maryland residency. Bring originals or certified copies where required; the MVA says copies, scans and photocopies are not accepted for the first-license document process.

Applicants under 16 need a school-attendance form

A permit applicant under age 16 must also provide the applicable DL-300 school-attendance/identity form, following the MVA's instructions for school or parent/guardian certification.
