Wisconsin adult first driver
Wisconsin first driver license for adults
Adults learning to drive in Wisconsin use the Class D instruction permit before the first license. The teen driver-education and sponsor rules do not apply at age 18+, but the testing, documents and permit-driving restrictions still do.

Pass the permit tests and document review
Adults complete the Class D knowledge and signs tests, vision screening and the required identity/status/residency steps.
Practice with an eligible accompanying driver
Instruction-permit restrictions require an experienced licensed driver in the front passenger seat who meets Wisconsin's relationship/age rules.
Schedule the skills test when ready
A valid instruction permit is required for the road test. New Wisconsin residents may need to begin the application at a customer service center before online road-test scheduling becomes available.
