Utah learner-permit requirements

A Utah learner permit can begin at age 15. The path to a Class D license changes with age, especially for driver education and how long the permit must be held.

Start with the learner permit

Applicants begin with the required application, documents, eye screening and knowledge testing for the permit.

Holding periods depend on age

Drivers age 16–17 generally hold the permit six months. At age 18 there is no permit holding period but driver education is required; at 19+ the usual period is 90 days unless approved driver education is completed.

Complete the practice requirement

The licensing path uses 40 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours after sunset.
