North Carolina Driver Handbook for the permit test

NCDMV publishes the North Carolina Driver Handbook and separate sign resources. Use the current state copy as your source for traffic laws, safe-driving rules, licensing steps and the traffic-sign material used in testing.

Use the current NCDMV handbook

The regular Driver Handbook is the main reference for original Class C licensing and learner permits. NCDMV also publishes Spanish and separate regulatory- and warning-sign resources.

  • Study traffic laws and safe-driving practices.
  • Review signs by color and shape, not only by wording.
  • Recheck licensing procedures on NCDMV pages because process rules can change faster than handbook editions.

Connect the handbook to the three permit checks

For an original learner permit, NCDMV describes vision, traffic-sign and knowledge testing. The handbook explains what each test is intended to measure.
