North Carolina document checklist
Documents for a North Carolina learner permit
NCDMV requires proof in several categories. The exact list depends on the credential and applicant, so use the official Required Documents tool and the age-specific permit page before your visit.
- Identityproof required
- NC residencyproof required
- SSNproof required
Core document categories
- Proof of identity and date of birth.
- Social Security card or another accepted proof of Social Security number.
- Proof of North Carolina residency.
- Any legal-presence documentation that applies to your case.
Teen Level 1 applicants
The current Level 1 page also requires the Driver's Education Certificate. NCDMV states that the Driving Eligibility Certificate is no longer required effective October 1, 2026.
Check the official list before you travel
NCDMV's Required Documents pages define accepted documents and can differ for standard and REAL ID transactions. Do not rely on a copied checklist from an unofficial site.
