Michigan Level 1 Learner's License for teens

Michigan teens use Graduated Driver Licensing. After completing Segment 1, a teen can apply for a Level 1 Learner's License from age 14 years and 9 months with a parent or guardian.

Complete Segment 1 first

Segment 1 includes classroom, behind-the-wheel and observation components plus the state exam. A score of at least 70% is required on the Segment 1 exam.

Apply for Level 1 at Secretary of State

At the office, the teen must meet the vision and document requirements and pay the current licensing fee. Level 1 driving is supervised by the permitted adult.

Build supervised experience before Segment 2 and the road test

Michigan requires at least 30 supervised hours including 2 at night before Segment 2, and a total of at least 50 hours including 10 at night before the driving skills test, along with the required Level 1 holding periods.
