Iowa document checklist
Documents for an Iowa permit or first driver license
A first Iowa driver license or ID requires documentation of identity, date of birth and lawful status or presence, your Social Security number if you have one, and two documents showing your current Iowa residence.
- 1identity/lawful-status document
- 1SSN document for REAL ID
- 2Iowa residency documents
Identity, date of birth and lawful status
Iowa requires a qualifying document that establishes your identity, date of birth and lawful status or presence in the United States. Temporary foreign nationals may receive limited-term credentials tied to the period Iowa can verify.
Social Security information
Applicants provide a Social Security number when applicable. For REAL ID, Iowa asks for one document containing your current name and full SSN and verifies the number electronically.
Two Iowa residency documents
Iowa's REAL ID process requires two printed documents showing your current name and Iowa residential address. Use the DOT's personalized checklist because accepted documents and name-change requirements can differ by applicant.
