Washington learner permit requirements
Washington's learner-permit path depends on age and driver training. Teens in approved driver training can apply from age 15; without training, the permit is available from 15½ and the first license must wait until age 18.

The Washington learner-permit path
- Get or confirm your WDL number.
- If you want a license before 18, enroll in approved driver training.
- Study the Driver Guide and pass the knowledge test when required.
- Complete the permit application and identity requirements.
- Pay the learner-permit fee and follow the supervision rules.
Driver training changes the teen path
A teen enrolled in approved training can apply from age 15 and can work toward a license before 18. Without approved training, DOL says to wait until 15½ for the permit and until 18 for the license.
New first-license rule starts November 1, 2026
Starting November 1, 2026, first-time Washington driver-license applicants under 25 must complete the free online work-zone and first-responder safety course before receiving the license.
