South Carolina test format

South Carolina beginner's-permit knowledge test

South Carolina requires vision and knowledge testing for the original beginner's permit. SCDMV's current public materials do not need an invented fixed question count to build a reliable study plan.

  • Visionscreening required
  • Knowledgepermit test
  • No testing aidsduring the exam

Where the knowledge test is given

Vision and knowledge tests are available through SCDMV branches, and authorized third-party Class D programs may provide testing for eligible first-time applicants.

Testing aids are not allowed

SCDMV prohibits manuals, written materials and electronic devices that could assist with answers in the knowledge-test area.

Study the current manual, not a guessed test size

Prepare from the official Driver's Manual and focus on road rules, traffic controls, signs and safe-driving decisions.
