Know the three basic sign categories
PennDOT groups signs into regulatory, warning and guide signs. Learn both the message and the visual cues: shape, color, symbol and placement.
- Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires or prohibits.
- Warning signs alert you to hazards or changing road conditions ahead.
- Guide signs provide route, destination, service or other directional information.
Study signals and pavement markings too
Chapter 2 also covers red, yellow and green signals, arrows, flashing signals, pedestrian and railroad signals, lane-use controls and pavement markings. Yellow lines generally separate opposing traffic; white lines separate traffic moving in the same direction.
Use PennDOT's own sample questions
PennDOT publishes sample question sets for Chapters 2, 3 and 4. Use the Chapter 2 set after studying signs, signals and pavement markings, then review every missed concept in the manual.
