Pennsylvania document checklist

Documents for a Pennsylvania learner's permit

For the standard learner's-permit process, PennDOT tells applicants to bring the completed DL-180, original proof of date of birth and identity, a signed Social Security card and the applicable fee. Applicants under 18 also bring DL-180TD.

  • DL-180permit application
  • OriginalsID / date-of-birth proof
  • DL-180TDrequired under 18

Standard learner's-permit checklist

  • Completed Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application, Form DL-180.
  • Original proof of date of birth and identification from PennDOT's accepted list; photocopies are not accepted.
  • Signed Social Security card.
  • Applicable permit/license fee.
  • If under 18, completed Parent or Guardian Consent Form, DL-180TD.

The DL-180 also includes your health-care-provider section

Your health care provider completes the medical section of DL-180. If your provider or optometrist does not perform the vision test, PennDOT tests your vision at the Driver License Center.

REAL ID is optional and has a separate document checklist

Pennsylvania does not make REAL ID mandatory for every driver. If you choose a REAL ID credential, PennDOT asks for evidence of identity and lawful status, Social Security documentation, and two documents showing Pennsylvania residency; additional records can apply to name changes or non-U.S. citizens.
