The Ohio first-license path

  • Study the current Ohio Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws and official sample test.
  • Pass the knowledge test and vision screening online/in person as permitted by BMV.
  • Bring the required documents to a deputy registrar license agency and purchase the TIPIC within 60 days of passing the tests.
  • Complete the driver-education and supervised-practice requirements that apply to your age.
  • Schedule and pass both parts of the Driving and Skills Test.
  • Purchase the driver license at a deputy registrar within 60 days after passing the skills test.

Training requirements depend on age

Applicants under 18 must complete approved driver education, 50 supervised driving hours including 10 at night, and hold the TIPIC for at least six months. Ohio also requires Class D driver education and 50 supervised hours for first-license applicants ages 18 through 20.

Applicants over 21 follow the adult TIPIC path

An applicant over 21 can take the knowledge test online or at an approved in-person location and obtain a TIPIC. During practice, the supervising motorist must hold a valid license and be at least 21. The applicant can then take the Driving and Skills Test; additional training applies after a first failed road or maneuverability attempt.
