Montana learner-permit requirements
Montana uses a Non-Commercial Learner Permit (NCLP), with a special traffic-education route for younger teens and standard written-test routes for other applicants.
- 14½driver-ed learner permit
- 15+regular teen route on current page
- 1 yeartemporary NCLP validity
Core steps
- Study the Montana Driver Manual.
- Schedule the correct written-exam appointment.
- Bring proof of identity, residency and authorized presence plus parental consent when required.
- Pass the written exam and follow the NCLP supervision and practice rules.
Traffic education can start the permit path at 14½
Students in a state-approved traffic education program may receive a driver-ed learning permit at age 14½.
Adults also pass written, vision and road tests
