Who must take the driving test
Iowa DOT requires the test for adults who have never held a license in a U.S. state or territory and in several other situations such as a license expired or invalid for at least a year, certain medical or restriction cases, court orders or re-examination after certain crashes.
Your vehicle is inspected first
The test vehicle must be legal and safe. Iowa checks items such as plates, registration, insurance, horn, turn signals, mirrors, doors, seat belts, brake lights and weather-dependent lights and wipers.
What Iowa looks for on the road
The examiner watches how you obey signs and signals, observe your surroundings, steer, accelerate, stop, choose lanes, signal, maintain safe distance and adjust speed. Iowa DOT currently says parallel parking is not required on the drive test.
