Alaska instruction permits begin at age 14. Practice requires a licensed driver age 21+ with at least one year of experience in that vehicle type.
Complete the required testing
Alaska's general knowledge test allows 25 minutes for 20 questions and requires 16 correct answers to pass. The state also provides an online testing option for the written Class D test.
Follow the legal practice rules
Drivers age 16–17 can move to a provisional license after holding an instruction permit at least six months, maintaining the required clean record and passing the road test. The state manual describes 40 hours of supervised practice including 10 hours in challenging conditions such as night or inclement weather.
