North Dakota learner permit for teens
North Dakota uses age-based graduated licensing requirements for drivers under 18.
- 14minimum permit age
- 50 hourspractice for under 16
- 6 monthsminimum hold in key teen paths
Ages 14–15 have extra training requirements
NDDOT requires acceptable formal driver education and 50 hours of practice driving in variable conditions.
The manual explains the under-16 hold period
For ages 14–15, the current manual describes 12 months or until age 16, whichever comes first, but no less than six months.
Ages 16–17 generally hold the permit six months
They then move to the road-test stage under NDDOT's age-specific rules.
