Massachusetts learner's permit requirements
You must be at least 16 to apply for a Massachusetts Class D learner's permit. The process starts online, then includes an in-person document check and vision screening before the permit exam.

The Massachusetts first-permit path
- Start the Class D learner's permit application online.
- Make an appointment at an RMV Service Center or eligible AAA branch and bring the required documents.
- Pass the field-vision/basic-color screening.
- Take and pass the Class D permit exam online or at the Service Center.
- Practice legally on the permit and prepare for the road test.
Applicants under 18 need written consent
The RMV requires written consent from an authorized adult for applicants under 18. Junior Operator requirements apply before an under-18 applicant can receive a license.
Permit validity
A Class D permit is generally valid for two years, or for the length of the applicant's authorized stay when that is shorter.
