The first step for a new Connecticut driver is the learner-permit process. Residents age 16+ can apply, with a separate adult learner-permit path from age 18.

Complete the Work Zone Safety Course
Connecticut places the free online Work Zone Safety Course before the permit-testing step for new drivers.
Pass vision and knowledge testing
The knowledge exam has 25 questions and requires 20 correct answers. Vision screening occurs first.
Complete the training for your age
After the permit, teen and adult applicants follow different training and holding-period requirements before the road test.
