Choose the correct appointment type
California DMV's appointment page directs customers to online services when an office visit is unnecessary and provides specific appointment choices for in-person services. Drive tests are scheduled by vehicle type through the DMV appointment system.
A knowledge-test re-evaluation and a regular first-time permit application are not the same transaction, so follow the path shown after your application rather than picking the first testing option you see.
For a first instruction permit
DMV's learner-permit instructions tell applicants to complete the application and then visit a DMV office with the required identity and residency documents. Teen applicants have additional education and parent/guardian requirements.
Behind-the-wheel tests require an appointment
California DMV states that a driving test is not given without an appointment. Schedule only after you meet the permit and training requirements that apply to your route.
