Alabama learner-license requirements
Alabama's Stage I learner license begins at age 15 and allows supervised driving after the applicant passes the required written examination and completes ALEA issuance requirements.

Stage I begins at 15
The applicant must pass the written examination based on the Alabama Driver Manual.
Practice with an eligible supervisor
A Stage I teen drives with a parent, guardian, licensed driver age 21+ or qualified driving instructor seated beside them.
Under 18: six months before Stage II
Drivers under 18 must hold Stage I for at least six months and be at least 16 before the restricted Stage II license.
